Moraes Triumphs in Chaotic Dakar 2025 Stage 7 | Lategan’s Lead Evaporates

Moraes Triumphs in Chaotic Dakar Stage 7,
Lategan’s Lead Evaporates
Stage 7 of the Dakar Rally brought a dramatic shake-up in the standings as Toyota’s Lucas Moraes powered to victory over Ford rival Mattias Ekstrom. Competitors tackled a shortened 418km loop around Al Duwadimi on Sunday, with a delayed start to ensure medical helicopters could be deployed. Unexpected rain made the stage even more treacherous, and a navigational hiccup at the 158km mark caused multiple drivers to stray off course, forcing organizers to neutralize a 20km section of the route.

Moraes emerged from the chaos to claim a dominant 7m41s triumph in his Toyota Hilux, rebounding from a costly mechanical issue on Saturday that had derailed his overall hopes. Ekstrom initially led at the first checkpoint but slipped to fourth before clawing his way back to second, securing his strongest result of Dakar 2025. His teammate, American Mitch Guthrie Jr., completed a solid day for Ford by finishing third.

Toyota driver Seth Quintero and Dacia’s Cristina Gutierrez crossed the line in fifth and sixth, respectively. Yazeed Al-Rajhi continued to impress as the top Overdrive Toyota runner, placing seventh. Mini’s Denis Krotov grabbed ninth, just behind the Toyota of Stage 3 winner Saood Variawa.

Sunday proved tough for overall leader Henk Lategan, who dropped 15 minutes in his factory Hilux and slipped to 15th in the stage. The South African’s once-comfortable cushion has now shrunk to a mere 21 seconds over Al-Rajhi, who also didn’t have a perfect run but still closed the gap. Ekstrom sits just 10 minutes behind, while five-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah reduced his deficit to 21m57s. Mitch Guthrie Jr. and Century’s Matthieu Serradori also remain in the hunt, both trailing Lategan by under an hour.

Due to the roadbook confusion, event officials revised the final results for several drivers who had been caught out by the error. As part of those adjustments, Al-Attiyah was bumped up to fourth in the stage standings, ending the day only 11m15s behind Moraes. With five stages remaining, the competition is heating up, and no one at the top of the leaderboard can afford another misstep.
